Aspect ratios for Meta ads (1:1, 4:5, 9:16) and how to handle them in a bulk launch

Three ratios cover almost every Meta placement. The decision is not which ones to make; it is whether Meta crops for you (an enhancement) or you export each ratio and control the frame. In bulk, that decision has to be made once.

The three ratios that matter

RatioPixelsWhere it runs best
4:51080 x 1350Facebook and Instagram Feed: the tallest frame Feed shows in full
9:161080 x 1920Stories and Reels: full screen, with safe zones top and bottom for the UI
1:11080 x 1080Universal fallback; still common for carousel cards and right-column

Landscape (16:9 / 1.91:1) exists for a few placements and link previews; export it only if you are running those placements deliberately.

For a typical Feed plus Stories plus Reels campaign the practical answer is: 4:5 and 9:16, and optionally 1:1 for carousels.

Meta crops, or you crop: pick one

If you upload a single 4:5 asset with automatic placements, Meta has to show it on 9:16 surfaces somehow. It will either pad it, or, if the relevant Advantage+ enhancements are on ("visual touch-ups", "expand image"), reframe or outpaint it. That is not a separate decision from your enhancement policy; it is the same decision. If you turn enhancements off so your creative runs exactly as made (see how to turn off Advantage+ creative enhancements), then you own the framing, and you owe each placement the ratio it needs.

So the real workflow question is: how do the right ratios reach the right placements in a bulk batch?

Three ways to route ratios to placements

1. One ad per ratio, placements per ad set

Export 4:5 and 9:16 versions of every concept. Create (or use) an ad set with Feed placements for the 4:5 files and an ad set with Stories and Reels placements for the 9:16 files. Each ad carries one file, no cropping, no enhancements needed. Simple, fully controllable, and it costs you a second ad set per audience.

2. Placement asset customisation on one ad

Ads Manager lets a single ad carry different assets per placement group. Upload the 4:5 as the default and assign the 9:16 to Stories and Reels. Best control with one ad set, but it is a per-ad configuration; doing it for forty ads by hand is the kind of clicking a bulk tool is supposed to remove.

3. File-name tags grouped by a tool

Some uploaders detect ratio tags in file names (_1x1, _4x5, _9x16) and build one ad with per-placement assets from the group. Rapid Ads, Ads Uploader and AdManage offer this in various forms. It is the most convenient approach when your export pipeline already produces tagged files; the constraint is that the group has to be complete (a lone _9x16 file with no partner cannot be grouped).

Adlio currently follows approach 1: one file, one ad; one image group, one carousel. It does not build placement-customised ads from tags. If per-placement assets in a single ad are central to your setup, one of the tools above fits better today, and we would rather say that than pretend.

A file-naming scheme that survives any of the three

Put the ratio in the file name at export time, in a fixed position, in the same vocabulary every time:

{concept}_{hook}_{format}_{ratio}_{version}.{ext}
SUMMER_price-drop_vid_4x5_v1.mp4
SUMMER_price-drop_vid_9x16_v1.mp4
SUMMER_price-drop_img_1x1_v1.jpg

Why this pays off three times:

  • Sorting: a folder sorts by concept, then by ratio, so you can drop "everything 9x16" into the Stories ad set in one selection.
  • Naming: if your ad name pattern includes {filename}, the ratio is visible in Ads Manager and in your analytics rows without extra fields. See the naming convention guide.
  • Tools: the same tags are what ratio-grouping uploaders read, so the files work everywhere.

Video specifics

The ratio rules are the same for video; the safe zones matter more. On 9:16, keep text and key visuals out of the top and bottom bands the Stories and Reels UI covers, and export a constant frame rate in MP4 or MOV with H.264 and AAC. The upload and processing path for a batch of videos is in bulk uploading video ads to Meta.

Before the batch goes live

Preview one ad from the batch on Feed, Stories and Reels (check 7 on the pre-launch QA checklist). If the frame is not what you exported, the cause is upstream: a wrong file in a placement-specific ad set, or an enhancement left on. Because Adlio creates everything paused, that check costs a minute and no budget.

Frequently asked questions

Which aspect ratios do I need for Meta ads?+

For most accounts, two: 4:5 (1080 x 1350) for Feed placements and 9:16 (1080 x 1920) for Stories and Reels. 1:1 (1080 x 1080) is a safe universal fallback and still common for carousels. Landscape 16:9 is only worth exporting for placements that specifically need it.

If I upload one 4:5 file, what happens on Stories and Reels?+

Meta fits or crops it for the placement. Whether that crop is acceptable is exactly the "visual touch-ups" and "expand image" decision under Advantage+ creative enhancements: leave them on and Meta reframes; turn them off and the 4:5 shows with padding or letterboxing on 9:16 surfaces.

Can Adlio combine a 4:5 and a 9:16 file into one ad?+

Not today. Adlio creates one ad per file (and one carousel per group of images). If you want a different asset per placement, upload the ratio you want to run and use placement targeting per ad set, or use Ads Manager's placement asset customisation on the created ad. Rapid Ads, Ads Uploader and AdManage group ratio variants from file-name tags; that is a feature they have and we do not.
