How to duplicate Facebook ads faster, and what duplication silently changes

Duplicate is the most used button in Ads Manager and the least understood. A duplicate is a new object with Meta's defaults where you did not override them. Three of those defaults cost money.

The fast ways to duplicate

  • Single object: select the ad or ad set, press Duplicate (or Ctrl/Cmd+D), choose the destination campaign or ad set, set the number of copies.
  • Several at once: select multiple rows first; Duplicate then creates a copy of each into the chosen destination.
  • Quick duplication into the same ad set: useful for creative variants; you then open each copy to swap the media.
  • Export and Import: for large structural copies (many ad sets into a new campaign), export, edit the sheet, import. See Meta's bulk import spreadsheet, explained.

All of these are fine. The problem is not speed; it is what the copy is.

A duplicate is a new object with defaults

Ads Manager copies the fields you can see and creates new objects underneath. Three consequences follow, and each one is invisible in the list view.

1. Advantage+ enhancements come back on

Enhancements are a property of the creative. A duplicated ad gets a new creative, and a new creative starts with Meta's defaults, which for most enhancements is on. So the crop, recolour and text rewrite you switched off last week are back on the copy. This is the single most common "but I turned it off" ticket, and duplication is its cause. Mechanics and the API-level fix are in how to turn off Advantage+ creative enhancements.

2. Names drift

Every copy is called "Copy of ..." (or the original name with a suffix). Renaming is a manual step per copy, and manual steps get skipped. Two weeks later your breakdown by ad name has "Copy of" rows nobody can attribute. The naming convention guide explains why the pattern has to be applied at creation rather than typed afterwards.

3. Learning and social proof reset

A duplicated ad set is a new ad set: it starts the learning phase again. A duplicated ad is a new post: likes, comments and shares start at zero unless you deliberately created the ad from the existing post. Both are sometimes what you want (a clean test) and sometimes exactly what you did not want (a "small change" that threw away a month of signal).

The duplicate-and-swap trap

The most common bulk workflow in Ads Manager is: duplicate a good ad twenty times, open each copy, swap the image or video, rename, publish. Per copy that is two to three minutes when nothing goes wrong, and each copy carries all three problems above. Twenty copies is an hour of data entry with a typo rate and enhancements you have to switch off twenty times.

The signal that you have crossed from "duplicating" into "data entry" is simple: the copies differ only by creative. At that point the ad is a template and the files are the variable, and that is a batch-creation job, not a duplication job.

Batch-create instead

A folder-drop uploader inverts the workflow: the settings are stored once (per ad account: identity, pixel, copy, URL and UTMs, naming pattern, enhancement opt-out), and each file becomes an ad with those settings applied. With Adlio:

  • drop the twenty files, pick the campaign and ad set;
  • each ad is named from the pattern (no "Copy of"), gets the account's UTMs, and is created with the enhancement opt-out written into the creative;
  • every ad lands paused, so the twenty are reviewed as one batch and set live in one action.

Nothing is duplicated, so nothing inherits the wrong default. The comparison with manual duplication and the spreadsheet, with time estimates, is in how to bulk upload Facebook ads.

When duplication is still the right call

  • You want a clean test of the same creative in a new ad set (new audience, new placement) and accept the learning reset.
  • You are copying structure (ad sets, budgets, schedules) rather than creatives.
  • You need one or two copies, not twenty.

For those, duplicate, then run the three checks: enhancements on the copy's creative, the name, and whether you meant to reset learning or social proof. The pre-launch QA checklist covers them in order.

Frequently asked questions

Does duplicating an ad keep its likes and comments?+

Not by default. A duplicated ad gets a new creative and therefore a new post, so social proof starts at zero. To keep engagement you have to create the new ad from the existing post (the "use existing post" option or the post ID), which is a different action from Duplicate.

Why are Advantage+ enhancements on again after I duplicated an ad I had fixed?+

Because enhancements are stored on the creative and a duplicate creates a new creative with Meta's defaults. Your fix lived on the old creative. Every duplicate needs the opt-out again, or has to be created by a process that writes the opt-out at creation.

Does duplicating an ad set reset the learning phase?+

A duplicated ad set is a new ad set and starts learning from scratch. Duplicating an ad inside the same ad set does not reset the ad set, but adds a new ad that changes how the budget is spread. Plan for both when you duplicate.

When should I stop duplicating and use a bulk tool?+

When the duplicates differ only by creative. If you are duplicating the same ad twenty times to swap in twenty files, you are doing data entry; a folder-drop uploader creates the twenty ads from the files with the correct settings, paused, in one action.
