Facebook ad image specs for bulk launches: formats, sizes, ratios and the export settings that never get rejected

One wrong export setting on a single ad is a retry. On a batch of 50 it is 50 retries. These are the specs to lock in the export preset before the first bulk launch.

The one-page spec

At the time of writing, for image ads across Facebook and Instagram placements:

RecommendedNotes
FormatJPG or PNGJPG for photos, PNG for flat graphics or text
Resolution1080 px on the short side or more1080 x 1080 (1:1), 1080 x 1350 (4:5), 1080 x 1920 (9:16)
Ratio, Feed4:51:1 is the universal fallback; landscape 1.91:1 exists but shows small
Ratio, Stories and Reels9:16keep text out of the top and bottom UI bands
File sizeas small as the quality allowsMeta accepts large files; large batches upload slower
ColoursRGBwide-gamut profiles shift colours after Meta's processing
Text on imageminimalno hard limit any more, but it interacts with enhancements and delivery

Which ratio goes where, and how to route ratios to placements in bulk, is covered in aspect ratios for Meta ads. This article is about the export itself.

Lock the export preset

Set these once in your design or export tool and never touch them per file:

  1. Format: JPG at quality 80 to 90 for photography; PNG for graphics with hard edges or text.
  2. Resolution: exactly 1080 x 1350 for 4:5 and 1080 x 1920 for 9:16. Exporting 2x is fine but doubles upload time for no visible gain.
  3. Colour profile: sRGB, embedded. Display P3 or Adobe RGB exports look dull after Meta re-encodes them.
  4. Metadata: strip it. Camera EXIF and location data have no business in an ad file.
  5. File name pattern: {concept}_{hook}_{format}_{ratio}_{version}.jpg, decided with the creative team. See the naming convention guide.

What Meta does to your image, and what you can stop

Meta re-encodes every upload and, if Advantage+ creative enhancements are on, may also crop, brighten, expand or overlay it. Two consequences for a bulk export:

  • Export clean and slightly sharper than you want, because the re-encode softens edges a little.
  • If you want the image to run exactly as exported, the enhancement opt-out is not an image setting; it is an ad setting, written per creative. How to turn off Advantage+ creative enhancements covers it.

Batch hygiene before the drop

A bulk folder fails for boring reasons. Thirty seconds of checking prevents most of them:

  • Only image files in the folder. A stray PSD, HEIC, PDF or the design tool's thumbnail folder either fails or, worse, uploads as an ad.
  • One ratio per destination. If the ad set runs Feed, everything in the drop is 4:5 (or 1:1). Stories files go in their own drop.
  • Names follow the pattern, with leading zeros in counters (img_02 before img_10).
  • No duplicates with (1) suffixes from a cloud download. See Drive or Dropbox to Meta ads.
  • Versions are explicit. v2 in the name beats "final_final".

How Adlio handles images

Adlio accepts JPG and PNG, shrinks oversized images in your browser before upload so big exports do not slow the batch, uploads them to your ad account, and creates one paused ad per file with your naming pattern and UTMs applied and enhancements opted out. Images and videos can share a batch; image groups become carousels. There is no per-file settings screen because the settings live on the ad account, which is the whole point of exporting to a locked preset first.

Before the batch goes live

Preview one ad from the batch on Feed and one on Stories or Reels (check 7 on the pre-launch QA checklist). If the render is soft, the export was under 1080; if the colours shifted, the profile was not sRGB; if the frame is wrong, a ratio ended up in the wrong ad set. All three are export fixes, not Ads Manager fixes.

Frequently asked questions

Which image formats does Meta accept for ads?+

JPG and PNG. Use JPG for photos (smaller files) and PNG when you need sharp text or transparency. Adlio accepts both and shrinks oversized images in the browser before upload, so a 25 MB export does not slow the batch down.

What resolution should I export?+

At least 1080 pixels on the short side: 1080 x 1080 for 1:1, 1080 x 1350 for 4:5, 1080 x 1920 for 9:16. Larger is fine (Meta downsizes), smaller gets upscaled and looks soft on Reels and Stories.

Is there still a 20 percent text rule?+

Meta retired the hard 20 percent text limit in 2020, but image text still affects delivery and enhancements ("text improvements" and overlays interact with it). Keep text minimal and in the safe zones, and put the message in the primary text field instead.

What breaks a bulk upload most often?+

Mixed ratios in one batch aimed at the same placement, files that are not images at all (PSD, HEIC, PDF exports hiding in the folder), and names that do not follow the convention so ads cannot be told apart in Ads Manager.
