Can ChatGPT run Facebook ads? What it can do in 2026, what it cannot, and what you have to connect
"Run" means three different things: write the ads, build them in your account, or publish and manage them. ChatGPT does the first out of the box, the second and third only through a connector, and which connectors you can add depends on your ChatGPT plan. Here is the map as of October 24, 2026, and what an ad built this way launches with.
The short answer
Yes, with a connector, and the word "run" hides three different jobs:
- Write the ads. Copy, hooks, angles, audience ideas. ChatGPT does this with no connection to anything.
- Build the ads in your account. Campaigns, ad sets, creatives, ads. This needs a connection to Meta's Marketing API: Meta's own ads MCP server (open beta since April 29, 2026), or a tool's MCP, such as Adlio's (live October 24, 2026).
- Publish and manage. Set live, change budgets, read results. Meta's MCP can do all three, gated by portfolio rules and "explicit approval before anything goes live". Adlio's MCP deliberately cannot activate or change budgets.
Two constraints decide what you can actually do today. First, your ChatGPT plan: custom MCP servers with write actions are available on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, added by an admin, according to OpenAI's help center as checked on October 24, 2026; Free, Plus and Pro cannot add one. Second, defaults: an ad built by an agent launches with whatever the conversation did not mention left at Meta's default, enhancements included.
Job 1: writing, no connector needed
This is where ChatGPT earns its keep and where no tool competes: eight hooks for a cold audience, five headline variants under 40 characters, a rewrite for a different persona, a reading of last week's numbers if you paste them. Export what you approve. The file names and the copy are what you will hand to whatever builds the ads. The naming convention guide shows how to encode the concept, ratio and version in the file name before export, so the build step can read it.
Job 2: building, through Meta's MCP
Meta's ads AI connectors (announced April 29, 2026) give "a secure, Meta-authenticated connection from their ad account to an AI agent" with "no developer credentials, API setup, or coding required". Capabilities Meta names: reporting, "Create and edit ads, ad sets, and campaigns using natural language", catalog management, signal diagnostics. Since October 6, 2026, marketers can also "upload creative, preview ads as they'll appear on Facebook and Instagram", and "agent-staged work now lands as a draft in Ads Manager".
Which AI clients Meta supports is on Meta's own setup page; we have not verified ChatGPT against it today and will not claim it here. What we did read, on October 24, 2026, are the server's tool schemas, which tell you what any connected agent builds by default: Advantage+ creative enhancements at Meta's default unless the conversation sends a per-key opt-out as a JSON string; Advantage+ audience, Advantage+ placements and campaign budget on for new ad sets; DSA advertiser and payer from the business name; media from public URLs. Meta's ads MCP vs a bulk uploader has the full table.
Job 2, differently: building through Adlio's MCP
Adlio's MCP server (https://adlio.ai/api/mcp, paid plans) works in ChatGPT on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces: Plugins, add custom MCP server, paste the URL, authenticate with OAuth, sign in to Adlio, allow. The assistant then fills the same draft a person sees on /upload: files from public URLs, per-ad copy with up to five options per field, per-ad URL, campaign or ad set or a new campaign, CTA, UTM, sender, carousel grouping. It asks Adlio for a preview and, after you confirm it, launches.
What it cannot do is the point: it cannot see your Facebook token, change Settings, read spend, activate ads or change budgets, and it cannot launch without the previewToken of the exact draft you saw plus confirmed: true. The enhancement policy is whatever Settings say for that ad account (default: explicit OPT_OUT on all 69 keys the live API accepts, plus music off), and the server has no tool to change it. Every ad is created paused.
Job 3: publishing and managing
Through Meta's MCP, publishing exists. Meta's framing is control: drafts, "advertiser-set permissions", "explicit approval before anything goes live", and since July 16, 2026 the portfolio-level MCP server rules that let an owner govern agents "from budget changes to catalog updates". Set those rules before you connect anything; Meta's ads MCP server rules explains what they cover and what they do not.
Through Adlio, publishing does not exist as a tool. The batch lands paused, you check it in Ads Manager, you set it live. Draft vs paused vs in review explains why that paused state is the one you can verify from outside Ads Manager.
What an ad built by ChatGPT launches with
Whatever the conversation did not mention. That sentence is the whole risk. With Meta's MCP the enhancement opt-out is possible but is a payload the agent must reproduce on every creative; a key not sent is on. With Adlio the opt-out is stored once per account and written into every creative. From November 20, 2026, Meta's Commercial Terms make the advertiser "solely responsible" for AI features and for "any third-party software or service that you use or authorize", which covers ChatGPT, the connector and the tool; the AI Features clause has the text. Know what your chain sends.
A workflow that uses ChatGPT for what it is good at
- Write with ChatGPT: angles, copy, variants. No connector.
- Export the files, named by convention.
- Build through an enforcing layer: drop the folder on /upload, or, on a Business or Enterprise workspace, let ChatGPT fill Adlio's draft through the MCP and confirm the preview.
- Set the paused batch live in Ads Manager after the five-minute check.
- Paste the results back into ChatGPT next week.

Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT publish Facebook ads live?+
Through Meta's ads MCP server, agent-staged work "lands as a draft in Ads Manager" and "every action is gated behind advertiser-set permissions and explicit approval before anything goes live" (Meta, October 6, 2026); the publish step exists and makes objects active, so read the status before approving. Through Adlio's MCP the answer is no by construction: every ad is created paused and the server has no tool that activates ads.
Which ChatGPT plan do I need?+
For a custom MCP server with write actions: Business, Enterprise or Edu, added by a workspace admin or owner, according to OpenAI's help center as checked on October 24, 2026. Free, Plus and Pro cannot add one. Meta lists its supported platforms on its own MCP setup page; we only state what we verified.
Will ChatGPT turn Advantage+ enhancements off?+
Only if the conversation makes it, per creative. Meta's MCP exposes a master switch and an opt-in list; opting out per key is a JSON string the agent must send, and unsent keys get Meta's default. Through Adlio the opt-out is stored per ad account and written into every creative without being asked.
Is it safe to give ChatGPT access to my ad account?+
It is a permission decision, not a model decision. Three checks: what the connector can do (Meta's server has tools for budgets and activation; Adlio's does not), what rules the portfolio owner set (Meta's MCP server rules since July 16, 2026), and whether the work lands as a draft, as paused ads, or live. Revoke access from the account side when you stop using it.
